RECOMMENDED DESTINATIONS

Montoliva Vineyard & Winery (5629 Mount Olive Rd. Grass Valley, CA 95945)
Not to be missed!  Mark, the owner/grape enthusiast was an incredible host. Their wines made in an authentic Italian style, Mark entertained us with the history of Chicago Park and his own history with Montoliva.  The tasting room itself is not elaborate, and that is also a plus, just a few friends gathering to spend time and sample wine.  Rich in history and even richer in taste

Boeger Winery (1709 Carson Rd. Placerville, CA 95667)
Boeger wines so often on the way up to Apple Hill. Really cute winery to stop at for any occasion really.Lots of tasty red wines you will not experience flavors like these anywhere but here.  This winery tries many different grapes and does a fair amount of experimentation. They are known most for Barbera and Zinfandel. They do have a base $5 tasting fee, and provide a glass for their $15 tasting of the reserve list, which is very good, and stuff you won’t find in the store.
They have a bunch of blends that are unique and refreshing. Sauvignon Blanc is the best on the high production wines. Good values and not overpriced like many wineries are today. Some real gems on the Reserve list. Great place for a picnic and they do offer small cheese and cracker but you should probably pack a lunch. They also offer picnic foods as well so they can get you through the afternoon if you forgot to pack something.

Mt Vernon Winery (10850 Mount Vernon Rd. Auburn, CA 95603)
The tasting room is small and has a very intimate feel to it. It’s small enough that you’ll likely end up chatting with other patrons (all were couples).
This winery is a must if you’re in the area. The tasting room has a cozy casual vibe replete with a lovely patio area if you opt to taste outside.
The wines are delectable and the selection is vast so you are SURE to find your niche. The staff is knowledgeable about the wines, its history, and the Auburn area. Plus, they are really fun!  If Jerri or Leigh are working when you come in, you’re sure to have a splendid experience!
The winemaker is often around too and very approachable. Great wine, great staff, great find.

All you have to do is sit back, enjoy the beautiful landscapes and experience the best wines in Northern California.

Fawnridge Winery (5560 Fawnridge Rd, Auburn, CA 95602)
This place has it all:  gracious hosts, rural setting, eclectic art, and the best reds in the area. If you want a trek into simplicity and serenity, Stephanie and Stewart Parry, the owners will always greet you with smiles and warmth. Their tasting room is small, so more than 8 people would make it seem crowded. They aren’t a huge, upscale operation, so if you are looking for hoity-toity this ain’t the place for you. The location is gorgeous, very secluded. The service is beyond friendly. Winery provide some food pairings made with the wines they sell, they had some chocolates to taste with the wines, and paired really well with the dessert wine.

Rock Hill Winery (2970 Delmar Ave, Loomis, CA 95663)
Rock Hill Winery is tucked into rural Placer County just off Sierra College north of Loomis. The winery is surrounded by a decent vineyard with a very scenic vista. You first enter on a weird cobblestone driveway that may seem quaint but is very bumpy almost to the point of annoyance. The main tasting room is easily accessed with paved parking and a nice exterior. The tasting bar is a U-Turn around the main office with a horseshoe shape and bar stools.

Their tasting menu is very generous with nearly 10 different wines, although the taste and quality were inconsistent. To be fair, You may yet to find a Placer County winery that might appeal to your palate and several of the wine blends are interesting.
